Carizzo Plain Wildflowers
Posted in Hiking, Pictures, Polly, Tony on April 2nd, 2009This was no 2005 bloom, but the flowers were still pretty.

The highlight of the trip was the dogs’ encounter with Andrew’s kite

The puppy was subdued for a whole 5 hours after this.
Last weekend we finally drove (not biked, mind you) over the infamous Sonora pass to camp in the Toyiabe NF.

Hiking up to Secret Lake

Secret Lake, where Kostadis got nibbled on by a crayfish

We did a 6 mile 1300 foot elevation gain hike on Sunday, which just about killed the dog. 500 feet from the end he lied down in the shade in the middle of the trail and refused to move.

Eventually we were able to coax him to hobble to the campsite, where it turned out that he rubbed off his paw pads from the rocky trails. Now we are looking to get him these:

One of the few State Parks in CA to allow you to hike with your dog. Only of fire roads, not trails, but we’ll take it.
Starting out. I am stressed because we are on a “trail” not a “fire road.”

Group shot before we turned around, about 2.5 miles in

We ended up doing about 5 miles of hiking, with about 1/2 mile of it on a trail we were not supposed to be on. But we couldn’t actually figure out the “legal” way to get to Butano Fire Road, at least not without a ridiculous detour.
What a neat place. Looks like Sunol, but 1/100 the people. Takes twice as long to get to though.

It snowed 10 feet last week. We went to Kirkwood.

First backpacking trip of the season. There is still snow up in High Sierra, at this rate it’ll be up there until next year’s showfalls start.

Throw the snowball!

Whee!

Snow Kostadis
After doing the Yellow course at Sunol. He marked it pretty well too. Talk about “laying the yellow course”.
